Hiking the Serra de Tramuntana from Pollença: 5 routes

You can see the Serra de Tramuntana from the villa. And from the Serra, if you know where to stand, you can see the villa. These are the five routes we recommend to our guests, from easiest to most serious, all starting less than twenty minutes by car from the villa.

1. The Calvari of Pollença: the first-evening walk

365 steps from the Plaça Major up to the Calvari oratory. It is the walk everyone does, and you should too: half an hour climbing between cypress trees and, at the top, the whole town at your feet with the bay beyond. Go at sunset and walk down for dinner in the old town — our food guide tells you where.

2. Puig de Maria: Pollença's balcony

  • Distance: 3.4 km return · Ascent: 270 m · Time: 1 h 45 min
  • Start: signposted turn on the Ma-2200 road, 5 minutes from the town centre

A cobbled path zigzags up to the 14th-century sanctuary crowning the hill. From the top the whole north of the island makes sense: Formentor on one side, the Albufera wetlands on the other. There is water and simple food at the hostelry. It works surprisingly well with children if you take it slowly.

3. The Bóquer Valley: the birdwatchers' walk

  • Distance: 7 km return · Ascent: 150 m · Time: 2 h 30 min
  • Start: Port de Pollença, 10 minutes from the villa

A valley between rock walls that drops down to Cala Bóquer, a pebble cove with no services and plenty of charm. In spring and autumn it is a European birdwatching classic. Bring water: there is no shade on the final stretch.

4. Camí Vell de Lluc: the GR221 stage

The Dry Stone Route (GR221) crosses the whole Serra, and its final stage links the monastery of Lluc with Pollença along the old pilgrims' path, about 4-5 hours on foot. Our practical tip: leave a car in Pollença, take a taxi up to Lluc in the morning and walk back. Route details on the Consell de Mallorca website.

5. Penya des Migdia: the serious one

For trained legs: the ridge separating Pollença from the Port to the south, with easy scrambling sections and vertical views over the bay. Only in good weather, with mountain footwear and without children. If this is your level, the Serra — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape since 2011 — will keep you busy all holiday.

When to come walking

October to May. Autumn is the best-kept secret: temperatures of 18-24 °C, the mountains green after the first rains and the trails empty. In high summer, only the Calvari at sunset — leave the rest for another season.

After a day in the mountains, few things beat coming back to a villa with a private pool you don't have to share. If you are coming to walk in low season, ask us: check availability and prices — autumn and spring rates are a different story. More ideas on our activities page.
