Villa Pontarró

A house for walking in the Serra de Tramuntana

Ten beds at the foot of the range, in the months you can actually walk

The Serra de Tramuntana is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it starts, quite literally, behind the house. Villa Pontarró sleeps ten and sits in the countryside outside Pollensa, five minutes from the town where many of the northern routes begin or end.

What a group appreciates after a day on foot

  • Four bathrooms for ten people. Nobody queues on tired legs.
  • Pool and garden. After twenty kilometres of climbing, water does more for your legs than any massage.
  • Somewhere to dry things. Terrace, washing line and porch: boots and kit are dry by morning, which does not happen in a hotel.
  • A full kitchen. A proper breakfast at seven and dinner at ten, with nobody's dining-room hours to keep.
  • Parking for four cars on the property, to share out the runs to the trailheads.

Walks you can do from here

The Calvari steps in Pollensa — 365 of them — start in the town itself and make the perfect first-day warm-up. The GR-221, the dry-stone route, runs through the area, so you can walk sections of it and come home to the same bed instead of moving from refuge to refuge. And the Puig de María, just outside town, is a short climb with one of the best views over the bay.

Distances and ascents are in our guide to five routes.

When to walk, and when not to

March to May, and September to early November. July and August are not walking months here: it goes past 35°C and there is very little shade on the ridges. The good months are also mid-season rates, which split ten ways is a different proposition from August.

The house is open from March until the first Saturday of November. Outside those dates it is closed.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can you walk in July and August?

You can, but we would not recommend it to anyone: the range goes past 35°C and there is very little shade on the ridges. The walking months here are March to May and September to early November, which are also the cheaper ones.

  • Is there anywhere to dry boots and kit?

Yes: terrace, washing line and a covered porch. With ten people coming back wet that stops being a detail, and it is the thing a hotel handles worst.

  • Can you reach any route on foot from the house?

The Calvari steps and the Puig de María start from the town, five minutes away by car or a long walk. For the GR-221 and the mountain routes you need a car, which is where parking for four helps: you can share out the runs to the trailheads.
